Sväng elected to Womex showcase programme
Harmonica quartet Sväng has been chosen to perform in Womex, the largest gathering of world music professionals worldwide. The event will take place in Sevilla, Spain, on October 24 - 28.
Sväng will appear on the final evening concerts, October 27.
The Womex showcase programme is extremely hard to get in. This year, more than 600 candidates competed for less than 40 performance slots. Sväng was the only Finnish act to qualify. Another selected artist from Nordic countries was Majorstuen from Norway.
Visibility in Womex is noteworthy, because the event collects up the professionals of the field in a global scale annually. The combination of seminar, showcases and commercial trade fair boasts around 3000 attendants.
"This is an excellent opportunity", says Pekka Lehti, MD for Sväng's label Aito Records. "In many parts of the world we already have steady networks, but now we can find distributor and agent partners even in a larger scale".
With Sväng being elected, the five years of drought for Finnish artists in Womex ends. Earlier, the official showcases have featured Timo Väänänen, Värttinä, Kimmo Pohjonen and Maria Kalaniemi & Aldargaz. On the supplementary bandstand, Offwomex, performed Galaxy in 2004.
Sväng's sophomore album 'Jarruta' will be released in January 2008.
