Kantele Goes Electric in Kaustinen
Kantele Goes Electric in Kaustinen
Kantele, the national instrument of Finland, has undergone an epoch-making transformation. The traditional instrument has turned into an electric and highly visual, modern instrument. Finland’s leading kantele developer Hannu Koistinen has invented the new instrument with the help of the kantele player Timo Väänänen.
Now the kantele of the 21st century will be featured in the production called Kantele Goes Electric which will take its premiere at Kaustinen Folk Music Festival on July 16, 2002.
The production presents a group of versatile musicians making music without prejudice. Timo Väänänen is naturally the soloist on the electric kantele with 39 strings. The other kantele master Hannu Saha plays kanteles with 15 and 36 strings. Ismo Alanko on vocals, guitar, cello as well as electric kantele is the 'rockman' of the group. 'Accordion shaman' Kimmo Pohjonen goes wild again with his very own instrument. In addition, Abdissa 'Mamba' Assefa appears on percussions, Ville Kangas on fiddle and keyboards, and Timo Myllykangas on double bass.
The show is producted by Puu Kulttuurissa ry (Wood in the Culture), Kaustinen Folk Music Festival and The Kantele Province - North Karelia Project.
