Juhani Aaltonen Trio decorated with Jazz-Emma Award
Juhani Aaltonen Trio's "Mother Tongue" was awarded as the Best Jazz Album of the Year by the Finnish music industry's representative ÄKT ry. The Finnish National Group of IFPI delivered the annual Emma Awards in Helsinki on February 21.
"The music flows so easily among the three of us that playing together is a constant joy", said Juhani Aaltonen when making the winning album. During his career of four decades the veteran saxist has performed with e.g. Edward Vesala, Peter Brötzmann, Tomasz Stanko, Arild Andersen and Jan Garbarek.
The other nominees for the Best Jazz Album of the Year were Johanna Iivanainen's and Eero Koivistoinen's "Suomalainen", Ilmiliekki's "March of the Alpha Males", Alexi Tuomarila Quartet's "2", and XL's "Visual".
Only two weeks earlier Jazzrytmit Magazine's Critics Poll voted Juhani Aaltonen as the Musician of the Year with a remarkable marginal. He was also the choice for the best tenor saxist and flutist of 2003.
