Erik Bergman

Inspired by the northern nature, Arctica is a sister work to Lapponia (1975) for choir, and the slow middle movement is an orchestral version of the Juhannusyö (Midsummer Night) movement of the choral work. Arctica is a typically Bergmanian three-movement work painting sensuous and at times even mysterious tone pictures of the northern landscape. The middle movement limits itself throughout to subdued dynamics and is one of the most beautiful pieces ever written by Bergman. The expression in the outer movements, especially the finale, is more strident.

Pohjoisen luonnon innoittama Arctica on kuorolle sävelletyn Lapponian (1975) sisarteos, ja keskellä oleva hidas osa on kuoroteoksen Juhannusyö-osan orkestraalinen versio. Arctica on Bergmanin tuotannolle tyypillinen kolmiosainen kokonaisuus, joka maalaa aistimusvoimaisia, paikoin salaperäisiäkin sointikuvia pohjoisesta luonnosta. Mainittu keskiosa pitäytyy kauttaaltaan hiljaiseen dynamiikkaan ja kuuluu Bergmanin kauneimpiin luomuksiin. Ääriosissa, varsinkin finaalissa, ilmaisu on voimakkaampaa.
